1741 – Princess Isabella of Parma, wife of Joseph II Holy Roman Emperor. However, she died before his accession.  (d. 1763)

1805 – Marie d’Agoult, French author known by the pseudonym Daniel Stern (d. 1876)

1834 – Mary Jane Safford Blake, American educator and nurse for the Union Army during the American Civil War. She later graduated from medical school and worked as a practicing physician. (d. 1891)

1878 – Elizabeth Arden, Canadian businesswoman Florence Nightingale Graham, founded Elizabeth Arden, Inc. (d. 1966)

1885 – Princess Victoria Adelaide of Schleswig-Holstein, Duchess of Sax-Coburg and Gotha as wife of Charles Edward (d. 1970)

1901 – Júlia Báthory, Hungarian designer (d. 2000)

1904 – Umm Kulthum, Egyptian singer-songwriter and actress (d. 1975)

1918 – Virginia Davis, American actress (d. 2009)

1930 – Odetta Holmes, known simply as Odetta, American singer-songwriter, guitarist, actress, civil and human rights activist, “The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement” (d. 2008)

1938 – Rosalind Cash, American actress and singer (d. 1995)

1938 – Atje Keulen-Deelstra, Dutch speed skater and Olympic medalist (d. 2013)

1941 – Sarah Miles, English actress


439 – Saint Melania the Younger, Christian saint and Desert Mother (b. circa 393)

1510 – Bianca Maria Sforza, Holy Roman Empress as wife of Maximilian I (b. 1472)
