1810 – Ann Sophia Stephens, American author and editor, known for writing dime novels (d. 1886)

1820 – Anna Sewell, English author, known for her novel Black Beauty (d. 1878)

1863 – Mary Calkins, American philosopher and psychologist, first woman president of the American Psychological Association (d. 1930)

1882 – Melanie Klein, Austrian-born British psychoanalyst, known for devising new techniques for working with children (d. 1960)

1902 – Brooke Astor, American author and philanthropist (d. 2007)

1926 – Larissa Volpert, Russian chess Woman Grandmaster, three time Soviet women’s champion

1940 – Astrud Gilberto, Brazilian singer-songwriter, known for samba and bossa nova and for the song “The Girl from Ipanema”, inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2002

1806 – Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire as wife of William Cavendish the 5th Duke, celebrated beauty and socialite (b. 1757)

1842 – Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, French painter, known for her paintings at the French court, specifically for Marie Antoinette (b. 1755)

1853 – Abigail Powers Fillmore, First Lady of the United States as wife of Millard Fillmore (b. 1798)
