1429 – Joan of Arc begins a month long seige of La Charité that ultimately fails.

1859 – Adelina Patti makes her operatic debut at the Academy of Music in New York at the age of 16. She performed the title role in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.

1877 – The novel Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is published. One of the best selling books of all time, it prompts animal reform movements in both England and the United States.
