1711Laura Bassi, Italian scientist, She received a doctoral degree from the University of Bologna in May 1732. (d. 1778)

1752 – Jemima Wilkinson, American preacher (d. 1819)

1788 – Abigail Goodrich Whittelsey, American educator and editor of The Mother’s Magazine (d. 1858)

1832 – Louisa May Alcott, American author (d. 1888)

1835 – Empress Dowager Cixi of China (d. 1908)

1876 – Nellie Tayloe Ross, American politician, 14th Governor of Wyoming, director of the US Mint from 1933 to 1953 (d. 1977)

1910 – Elizabeth Choy, OBE, a Singaporean educator, councillor, and World War II heroine (d. 2006)

1915 – Ludu Daw Amar, Burmese dissident writer and journalist (d. 2008)

1918 – Madeleine L’Engle, American author, known for her book A Wrinkle in Time among others (d. 2007)

1921 – Dagmar, American model and actress (d. 2001)

1921 – Jackie Stallone, American astrologer, dancer, and women’s wrestling promoter

1930 – Dame Shirley Porter, Lady Porter, British politician


1780 – Maria Theresa, Empress consort of the Holy Roman Empire as wife of Francis I, the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions (in her own right) (b. 1717)

1941Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya, Soviet partisan (resistance guerrilla fighter against the Axis occupation during WWII); after being captured, tortured and interrogated, she was hanged. At her execution, she declared that she wasn’t afraid to die for her people. She was declared a Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously. (b. 1923)

1980 – Dorothy Day, American journalist and social activist (b. 1897)

1981 – Natalie Wood, American actress (b. 1938)
