1777 – Princess Sophia of the United Kingdom, daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte (d. 1848)

1841 – Isabella Macdonald Alden, American children’s author who wrote under the pseudonym Pansy (d. 1930)

1917 – Annapurna Maharana, Indian pro-independence activist (d. 2012)

1918 – Elizabeth P. Hoisington, US Army brigadier general, one of the first women to attain this rank with Anna Mae Hays (d. 2007)

1927 – Peggy McCay, American actress

1930 – Lois Smith, American actress

1931 – Monica Vitti, Italian actress

1933 – Aneta Corsaut, American actress (d. 1995)


1793Olympe de Gouges, French playwright, feminist and abolitionist, author of “Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen.” She was executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror for her criticism of the Revolutionary government. (b. 1748)

1858 – Harriet Taylor Mill, British philosopher (b. 1807)

1926 – Annie Oakley, American target shooter (b. 1860)

1928Eliza Scidmore , American travel writer and photographer. She is responsible for the initial idea of planting Japanese Cherry trees in Washington DC. (b. 1856)

1990 – Mary Martin, American actress, singer and Broadway star (b. 1913)
