1889 – Fannie Hurst, American novelist (d. 1968)

1897 – Isabel Briggs Myers, American author and theorist (d. 1980)

1898 – Lotte Lenya, Austrian singer and actress (d. 1981)

1919 – Anita O’Day, American jazz singer, “The Jezebel of Jazz” (d. 2006)

1919 – Camilla Williams, American operatic soprano and professor of voice at Indiana University, first African American to receive a contract with a major American opera company,  the New York City Opera, (d. 2012)

1920 – Melina Mercouri, Greek actress, singer, and politician, member of Parliament and first female Minister for Culture of Greece, conceived of the idea and proposed the program for the European Capital of Culture established by the European Union in 1985  (d. 1994)

1923 – Jessie Mae Hemphill, American singer-songwriter and guitarist (d. 2008)

1929 – Violeta Chamorro, Nicaraguan publisher and politician, President of Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997, first female head of state in the Americas

1938 – Dawn Wells, American actress, best known for playing “Mary Ann” on Gilligan’s Island in the 1960s

1947 – Laura Nyro, singer, songwriter, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (d. 1997)

1956 – Martina Navratilova, tennis champion
